Daikin Altherma; an Interesting Net Zero Application!

As a Daikin distributor in Ontario, we run into a lot of interesting challenges and we relish the chance to solve them with Daikin products.

The challenge

We were approached by a new custom home builder in Thornhill Ontario to consult on a heating and cooling system for his new build. He was looking to build a net zero energy house, this essentially means that the home would be efficient enough to use very little energy and generate enough energy from a solar system to cover the cost of the energy required to run the home.

The solution

Immediately, we knew that the Daikin Altherma air to water heat pump would be the perfect fit for his application. The Daikin Altherma is a revolutionary product that is a 3 in 1 solution for any home, office or multi tenant facility. This air to water heat pump provides heating, either in floor or forced air, potable (usable) hot water and air conditioning with one system and can also be connected to a solar system with a simple solar connection kit.

The Daikin Altherma air to water heat pump offers efficiencies that compete or exceed with those of geothermal systems with lower capital costs and much lower installation costs because there is no expensive drilling required.

The Results

The Daikin Altherma not only helped to provide the builder with his net zero energy goal, it also provided him with a platinum LEED certification. This is a new standard of measuring efficiency in buildings that I will talk about in future articles.

This was such a perfect application with great positive results that Daikin AC decided to commission a full case study on this project.

Next week I’ll write about installing a Daikin Air conditioner and how easy it is to diagnose a problem.

One Response to Daikin Altherma; an Interesting Net Zero Application!

  1. EJ Meade says:

I am looking to use an Altherma heating system in an alpine location here in Colorado. I am looking for case studies of their use in cold weather environments. Our site is at 8500 feet and I understand that we will lose about 2% efficiency per 1000 feet of elevation but would like information on cold climate installations. Any information you could provide is appreciated.

    thanks,
